  1. Some things to consider: 1. Most apartments require you to be to pay 3x the rent upfront to sign the lease. Basically, if the rent is $1000, you have to pay $3000 to move in. The $3000 includes First, last month and security deposit. 2. Find out what utilities you are required to pay in addition to the rent. Most apartments make you pay gas and electric. Paying only electric goes a long way.... 3. Some apartments make you show proof you earn 3 times the monthly rent from your job. In the same example with rent of $1000, you may be required to make atleast $3000 per month before taxes.... 4. Make sure to look at the early lease termination clause. Some places make you give a 90 day notice, while others are locked in for 12 months. So that means if you lose your job or move, they will sue you for the remaining months on your lease. Since we are on the lease topic, if you truly love the apartment, you may want to get a 2 or 3 year lease only if you know you can live there that long. The benefit will be that they cannot raise the rent until your two or three year lease is over. My friend pays $825 for a two bedroom apartment because she moved in 6 years ago and signed two year leases, while I pay $800 for a one bedroom and now the same two bedroom apartment is around $990 per month..... 5. My personal recommendation: move in with roommates, it may be tough, but you will save allot of money in the long run. You can find rooms to rent on Craigslist or get an apartment with someone else. Make sure all tenants are on the lease and on all utilities together. Rent, cable, phone, Netflix, internet all get very expensive... I saved $24,000 after college by moving back home with my dad for one year, then having roommates for 3 years after that. I was able to get my own apartment 5 years ago but worked on building my savings. I would highly recommend you get roommates and invest your extra savings in an IRA. Starting at 18 years old, you can easily have over 1 million by the time your 65 by just investing $60 per week. I’m 29 and because I just started, I have to invest around $250 per week to get to 1 million. Hope this helps
